Aircrew flight equipment can benefit from an FCC General Radio Operators License and this is how. The FCC exists to mandate 24 hour radio communications on board all aircraft and maritime vessels. Monitoring emergency frequencies, governing and assigning radio traffic frequencies are also included.

The General Radio Operator License (GROL) enables you to internally repair, maintain and adjust radio equipment in 32 industries. Two of these are aviation and maritime.

Our military aircraft currently use survivor radio and personnel locator systems that consist of voice and secure data, Satellite Communications (SATCOM) and Low Probability of Exploitation, Ultra High Frequencies, Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking System Multi-Band/ Broadband, Very High Frequency, Military GPS and more. AFE technicians maintain and repair these components during daily operations and already have the technical skills required to maintain these same systems in the civilian sector. AFE technicians maintain the systems used by search and rescue control centers for aircrew recovery in case of an emergency. The importance of maintaining such systems is critical and may be the difference between life and death.

Use in civilian sector

Just as military aircraft use survivor radio and personnel locator systems.  Civilian aircraft and maritime vessels also rely on these same emergency systems. One example is the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, or EPIRB, which alerts search and rescue services in the event of an emergency. Once the EPIRB is activated, it transmits a coded message on a specific frequency via satellite and earth stations to the nearest fixed rescue radio station. Some EPIRBs includes built-in GPS that can alert rescue services to accurately locate personnel.

AFE technicians obtaining the GROL will validate their knowledge and skills acquired. All skills learned while maintaining these components during daily operations. The GROL certifies technicians to work on similar components in the civilian sector. In many cases, some civilian positions require the GROL to even apply for the job. Why Every A&P Mechanic Especially Avionic Technicians should seek the General Radio Operator License (GROL

Nowadays aircraft are becoming technologically advanced with electronic integrated mechanical components. Airframe and Powerplant certification (A&P) mechanics can not limit themselves by strictly working within the scope of the A&P andnot considering the value of the additional certifications. Additionally, avionic technicians should also learn the A&P mechanical components so they are multifaceted team membersin any aviation company. Today’s small to mid-size aviation businesses can’t afford to pay two different type of technicians.These companies cut costs by hiring employees that hold multiple certifications or licenses. An aircraft technician who obtains the A&P and GROL will become a valuable team member and improve their career opportunities.

 

An A&P mechanic which also holds a GROL will look favorable and this strategy should get your resume moved to the top, filtering out any competition without these credentials. Obtaining these licenses also shows the employer that you can dedicate your drive to a certification plan to gain required industry knowledge. Drive, dedication and commitment are the type of personality traits employers seek when looking to build a great team.

 

Avionic technicians should seek to get licensed in GROL or any other related certification in their field. In order to stay competitive, many of these technicians are also seeking the A&P. Avionics technicians are some of the highest paid maintainers in the aviation industry when they hold a GROL and an A&P. You can still get great job as a civilian military contractor and not need either license to apply for these positions. Although personally, I wouldn’t take the chance of being passed up by someone that took the time get get either license. In stark contrast to military contracts, many civilian companies require that a candidate obtain both before being able to submit an application.

 

If you are currently serving in the Armed Forces it is wise to obtain these licenses with tuition assistance from any of the AFCOOL,NAVYCOOL or ArmyCOOL benefits. The military offers many opportunities to obtain training, testing and certifications that directly translate to the civilian sector. If you currently work on military aircraft, you know our latest aircraft are
fly-by- wire and even the older aircraft are being upgraded with new technology. The longer the government keeps these aging aircraft around, they will continue to upgrade avionics and mechanical components through modifications and upgrade packages. Everything you learn maintaining existing military aircraft prepares you to take a quick refresher course and easily pass licensing exams. An aircraft mechanic just needs some basic knowledge of electronics and radar to obtain the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) GROL. All the training was provided at tech school and simply needs a little dredging to resurface to the top of memory.

 

Maintenance supervisors should encourage their troops to pursue certifications while the education benefits still exist. Any service member will tell you education benefits change as often as the uniforms do, don’t let great benefits you deserve go unused. People always ask..

“What is the FCC GROL General Radio Operator License Value?”

My response is always the same, but let us actually break it down. There are several reasons for getting any license. Each depending on each individuals goals, plans and values.

Several students come through and take the examinations because it is a validation of  the experience they have earned. There are some that choose to take the exams simply to get certification. Passing the exams gives something tangible that can add credibility and open doors in hundreds of industries. Some students simply want to educate themselves in other fields of work.

I had an Air Force retiree that was UNABLE to apply for certain jobs in Florida (where he was going to retire). Simply because he didn’t have both an A&P and the FCC GROL.

The value of a FCC GROL could be $60K a year for the job you wont be able to get without it.

Credentials

For many others it is a credential that validates the knowledge and experience they have acquired throughout their career. I’ve had students come through the course motivated by an hourly pay increase that awaits then upon completion of the course. Yes! Employers will pay A&P holders an increased wage for holding licenses in other fields of work. To be fair it makes perfect sense that an Employer will hire one employee that has many skills over two employees with individualized sets of skills. So for some the value is simply be a pay increase for a job they may already hold.

Then there are the folks that are unsure of whether they will stick to the the career path they chose in the military. There are also those that are smart enough to secure education at next to “ZERO” cost when it stares them in the face. Grasping education at a bargain with value that will only be identified years down the road. When you least expect it and apply for a job in an industry you don’t plan to be in.

FCC GROL (General Radio Operator License) Value

I don’t know the direct FCC GROL value for each scenario! But, I know that NOT having a license when it is readily available, is NOT a very smart strategy for being competitive in any Industry. Especially when you consider Air Force members have AFCOOL that covers the costs associated with obtaining the license.

The ONLY requirement is EFFORT to SIGN UP and attend.
